Materials Compatability Validation
ACI material analysis capabilities allow the producer to increase productivity, reduce cycle time, and improve product performance. ACI utilizes material analysis capability to explore the use of traditional and unconventional materials and processes for technological applications. ACI’s tools and techniques allow for a better understanding of polymers, ceramics, metals, and composite materials and their performance in electronic applications.
Some common material compatibility tasks include:
- Analyzing new materials and processes
- Determining reflow and melting temperatures
- Metallurgy
- Characterizing fluxes, adhesives, and residues
- Measuring the thermal characteristics of the curing of polymers such as underfills and adhesives
- Analyzing surface finishes
- Determine combustion temperature and decomposition temperature,
- Measuring the percentage of moisture in solid samples
- Determining solder joint shear and pull strengths
- Impedance, capacitance and other electrical tests

Thermal analysis
ACI has the capability of analyzing the thermal properties of materials using both Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA). DSC is used to obtain melting point and glass transition temperature. Thermal Gravimetric Analysis (TGA) is used to measure weight loss or gain of a sample with temperature. TGA is used to determine combustion temperature, decomposition temperature, and the percentage of moisture in solid samples.
- Metallurgy
Using SEM, EDS, optical microcopy, and SERA, ACI engineers investigate many of the metallurgical issues involved in electronics packaging. Metallurgy is used to study diffusion, intermetallic formation and growth, contamination, morphology, thermodynamics, and kinetics involving a number of electronics related metals, ceramics, composites, and semiconductors.
- Mechanical testing
ACI performs shear and tensile testing on surface mounted components and die (Mil-Std-883E method 2019.5), as well as other bonded parts. The testing machine applies shear loads up to 250kg.
